Italy Study Abroad Trip 2011 - Effie Green

Monday May 23 – Florence to Milan

July 14th, 2011

LIZ’S BIRTHDAY!

Today we went to Milan by train. On the walk to the hostel I lost a suitcase wheel, which everyone seemed to find pretty funny. We had a little free time before we climbed up the roof of Duomo di Milano. We then went in the church where I got kicked out because of my outfit (woops my knees were showing). Luckily someone had an extra scarf for me. On the walk back to the hostel a group of us stopped at a panini shop and had the best panini ever!  That night we all went out to dinner for Liz’s birthday where we ate on a boat in this channel, it was a pretty fun night.

Sunday May 22 – Florence

July 14th, 2011

In the morning we hiked up to a spot to get a great view of Florence, I think Florence is way prettier than Rome. We then went to the Bargello museum. After that we had free time. Matt, Liz, Emily, and I shopped for a while until we were tired and needed a nap. Liz, Emily, Amanda, and I went to dinner rather late but I had the best Pesto yet! Walking back we saw the LSU basketball team who we met in Rome and talked with them for a while before heading back to the hotel for bed.

Saturday May 21 – Florence

July 14th, 2011

Today we went to Accademia and saw Michaelangelo’s David, I had no idea how large it was! I thought it was really cool seeing how they monitored it for cracks. We then went to Santa Croce, Basilica Di San Lorenzo, and Santa Maria Novella. Santa Croce had the tombs of Michaelangelo and Galileo. Afterwards we went to the Uffizi Gallery and saw a ton of paintings, one of which was The Birth of Venus. Later that night we had a terrace dinner consisting of food from local markets. We had olives, grapes, cheese, tomatoes, bread, salami, ham, and cherries. We also had a pretty great view of Florence as well. Afterwards almost our whole group went out to explore Florence together which was one of the most fun times I’ve had yet!

Friday May 20 – Rome to Florence

July 14th, 2011

This morning I went on my first train ride which was to Florence. I was really excited for Florence since my mom’s family is from there. Florence has a different feel then Rome, everyone is more laid back and happier. We went to the Galileo museum and saw huge globes and telescopes. We then climbed 463 steps to the top of Brunelleschi’s dome. It was really cool being between the 2 layers of the dome but kind of scary too, especially going down. Having read the book about the dome made it extra cool seeing it. We also had a great view of Florence at the top of the dome. We then went inside the actual church, Santa Maria del Fiora, which had a gothic style. Afterwards Liz, Emily, Amanda, and I ran through the pouring rain and it was super windy (horrible decision). Then a large group of us went to dinner at a place that served hamburgers and fries, it was the greatest dinner at the time since I had been craving meat. I went to bed at 8 o’clock because I was exhausted.

Thursday May 19 – Rome

July 14th, 2011

We woke up early and went to St. Peters Basilica. It was massive on the inside and absolutely stunning. We then broke into groups for a scavenger hunt around Rome. My team got last sadly. We had a short lunch break then went to the University of Roma and saw both the engineering building and main campus. The school has 150,000 students, I can’t imagine going to a school that large! I took a nap after we were done then went out to Camp Dei Fiori with some people.

Wednesday May 18 – Rome

July 14th, 2011

This morning we woke up and went to the Vatican. There was a huge museum that took most of the morning and afternoon, but there was a ton of cool ceilings. I really liked the map hallway. The coolest part was the Sistine Chapel but we didn’t get to spend much time in there or take pictures. We went to lunch afterwards and had a great plate of french fries (not the best but it was a nice taste of America). We then went to Castel Sant’ Angelo which had a creepy wood floor in one room. It gave us a great view of Rome though. After that we walked to the Spanish Steps for Ryan’s presentation and then went to the Leonardo da Vinci museum. It was a pretty interactive museum which I liked a lot. After a long day I had pizza and gelato then went to bed early.

Tuesday May 17 – Rome

July 14th, 2011

We started off by seeing an entrance to the city, Porta del Popol, we saw Santa Maria del Popolo which was a cute church. We then went to Trevi! Liz, Emily, and I are returning to Rome because we through a coin over our shoulders into the fountain (I really hope I do). We then went to the Pantheon and sketched and I had my favorite Pizza so far. We then went to the Capitoline Museums, which were absolutely huge! In them we saw the boy removing a thorn from his foot, the actual Marcus Aurelius statue, and we had a great view of the Roman forum. After the museums we climbed the big white thing (a landmark of ours for walking home at night). After all of that I took a great nap until some of us went to dinner with Dr. E before we headed to Campo Dei Fiori.

Monday May 16 – Rome

July 14th, 2011

We started off at the cat complex, this is where Ceaser was killed. We then went to Campo Dei Fiori, where there is a statue of the man who was killed for saying the earth revolved around the sun. We then went to Piazza Navonna, which is literally the prettiest place in Rome. Finally we went to Santa Maria Sopra Minerva which was plain on the outside but beautiful on the inside. There were way to many pigeons outside the church. We then went to the Spanish steps and window shopped at the designer stores.

Sunday May 15 – Rome

July 14th, 2011

We headed off to the Colosseum at 8am this morning. It was unreal to actually be in the Colosseum and see it up close. We then went to the Roman forum, Trajan’s forum, and the forum of Augustus. It’s hard to believe all of the things they built back then without machines and things we have now. My feet were in so much pain by the end of the day, but I had a great nap afterwards. We met up for an official group dinner which was a great three course meal, then most of us went to Camp Dei Fiori for the night.

Saturday May 14 – Rome

July 14th, 2011

The rest of our group arrived while Emily, Liz, and I slept in. We pretty much relaxed most of the day and read our books. We then went out to dinner as a whole group for the first time.
