General Description:
Dr. Shi is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Construction Management at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Before joining UNL in 2008, he was a professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and Director of the Center for Work Zone Safety and Mobility. Dr. Shi served on the faculty in the Department of Building and Construction at City University of Hong Kong from 1995 to 1999. His research areas include green buildings, highway work zone safety and mobility, modeling and simulation of construction operations, project planning and scheduling, construction delay analysis, productivity analysis and improvement, artificial neural networks, enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise-wide data warehousing and data mining, and computer applications. Dr. Shi is a registered professional engineer in Hong Kong, and a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), and Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Currently, he serves as a Council Member in the ASCE Research Council and CMAA Chicago Chapter. Prof. Shi has authored or co-authored more than 100 technical articles. He is a principal investigator of many funded research projects from various sources including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) with a total funding amount exceeding $2 millions. Dr. Shi has been invited to deliver more than a dozen public lectures and seminars. He received more than 10 fellowships and honors.

- Highway Work Zone Safety Audit Guidelines Development and Training, funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), $1,032,618 ($750,000 from FHWA and $282,618 matching from the three recipients.) September 2006-September 2010.
- An Automated Roadway Pavement Marker Placement System, funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), $564,575 ($451,660 from FHWA and $112,915 matching from the two companies.) November2007-October 2009.
