Appendix B: Dual Degree MArch and MEng in Construction

The Master of Architecture (March) and Engineering in Construction
(MEng) Dual Degree Program - 68 Total Credit Hours

This program stems from the continually changing models and variations in the practice of professional architects. The importance of understanding the construction management needs of corporate clients as well as the business of overseeing construction contracts and the diverse methods of delivery systems available has increased in the past fifteen years. For the architect to assume the lead role in the architect-led design/build process will require that the architect be well versed and experienced in the delivery process. In order to prepare architects, who are well informed about construction management issues and to assume the role as leader in architect-led design/build, this program was developed.

Based upon the reality of the need for architects to be well versed in construction practices, this program outlines a means of completing requirements for the Master of Architecture (M. Arch) and the Master of Construction Management (M. Eng) degrees concurrently. This proposal, which suggests a three-year course sequence, is built upon the following assumptions:

  1. Participants entering the dual-degree program will have completed the UNL Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) or equivalent degree program.
  2. Participants will have satisfied all entrance requirements for each of the two masters' degree programs.
  3. Designated requirements in one program will be accepted as elective courses in the other program and vice versa (see flow chart).
  4. Participants will have to select an advisor from each program that is knowledgeable in the dual degree program.
  5. To satisfy the M.Eng degree requirements, students are required to take at least 18 semeester hours of course work that is offered exclusively to graduate students.
  6. A Memorandum of Courses for the M. Eng.degree must be approved by the Office of Graduate Studies prior to the completion of 18 credit hours of course work that apply toward the degree.
  7. No more than nine credit hours of M. Arch degree course work shall apply towards the M. Eng degree.

An architecture student accepted into the M. Arch program, upon approval from the M. Eng. in Construction program coordinator, may take the M. Eng courses as electives in the M. Arch program. Based on estimated realistic graduate course loads a student can expect to obtain the M. Eng degree in two or three additional semesters beyond the time required to complete the M. Arch program. The core courses required in the M. Eng degree and the substitute course for fulfilling elective requirements of the M. Arch degree are depicted in the flow chart below.
