Course Objectives

For ELEC 121
Introduction to Electrical Engineering

The objectives for this course are for the students to:

  • demonstrate working familiarity with Binary numbers and number systems including sign-magnitude, one's complement, two's complement, and IEEE floating point format;
  • interpret Boolean algebra, know the function of logic gates, and combine these in a functional representation (e.g., minterms, maxterms, and truth tables);
  • simplify Boolean expressions via Karnaugh maps and implement with 2-level all NAND and 2-level all NOR gate circuits;
  • demonstrate knowledge of the functionality of special combinational circuits including adders, decoders and encoders, multiplexers, and PLD components;
  • build and use registers and counters;
  • exhibit the ability to analyze and design synchronous sequential circuits (using flip flops, state tables, state diagrams, and implementation);
  • demonstrate success in building, debugging, and testing (combinational and sequential) digital circuits in the laboratory including both their own designs and standard circuit designs; and
  • exhibit familiarity with electrical fundamentals in the laboratory using resistors and diodes.
