Course Objectives

For ELEC 421/821
Semiconductor Fundamentals

The objectives for this course are for the students to:

  • demonstrate knowledge in the basic semiconductor properties, especially charge carrier densities and charge carrier movement due to drift and diffusion;
  • apply the concepts of quantum mechanics to ascertain semiconductor properties;
  • understand the limitations placed upon semiconductors by such phenomena as generation and recombination in the bulk and at surfaces and interfaces;
  • be able to calculate static and dynamic characteristics of a pn junction diode; and determine current-voltage characteristics of other diodes such as Schottky barrier diodes.
