Dr. Wei Qiao joined the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) as an assistant professor in August 2008. Currently, he holds the position of UNL Harold and Esther Edgerton Assistant Professor. He has been promoted to associate professor with tenure (early promotion and tenure) effective August 19, 2013.
Professor Qiao’s research interests cover broad areas of electric power and energy systems, including renewable energy systems (wind, solar, etc.), smart grids, microgrids, power system control and optimization, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, energy storage systems, power electronics, electric machines and drives, FACTS devices, and computational intelligence for electric power and energy systems. His research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research (NCESR), Nebraska Research Initiative (NRI), and industry.
Professor Qiao is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, the Chair of the Technical Thrust of Sustainable Energy Sources of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), and the Chair of the Task Force on Intelligent Control for Wind Plants of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES). In 2011 he established a new IEEE PES/PELS/IAS Joint Student Branch Chapter at UNL and currently serves as the advisor of the Chapter. He is the Publications Chair of the 2013 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2013), and was the Technical Program Cochair and Publications Chair of the 2012 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines in Wind Applications (PEMWA 2012) and the Technical Program Cochair and Finance Cochair of PEMWA 2009.

Professor Qiao was the recipient of a 2010 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2010 IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Andrew W. Smith Outstanding Young Member Award, the 2012 UNL College of Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Activity Award, the 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Harold and Esther Edgerton Junior Faculty Award, and the 2011 UNL College of Engineering Edgerton Innovation Award. He has also received four best paper awards from the IEEE Industry Applications Society, IEEE Power Electronics Society, and IEEE Power & Energy Society.
