Mechanical & Materials Engineering

Graduate Admission Requirements

Students applying for a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in one of the Mechanical and Materials Engineering areas should have a Bachelor of Science in:

  • For M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering:
    • Mechanical Engineering or related area.
    • Students intending to study for the degree of Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with an Area of Specialization in Materials Science are expected to have undergraduate training in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related areas of Chemistry or Physics.
  • For M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics:
    • Mechanical or Civil Engineering, or other related area including science and mathematics.
  • For Ph.D. in Materials Engineering:
    • Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or related areas of science, engineering or mathematics.
  • For Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering:
    • A B.S. in engineering, science, or mathematics.

Ph.D. applicants may apply to enter the Ph.D. program directly after completing a B.S. or after completing an M.S. Students with less closely related academic backgrounds may be required to take additional prerequisite course work. All programs require:

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Personal statement of research interests and objectives

Additional requirements are specified below.

Applications are evaluated as they arrive, and full processing of an application requires approximately two months. Online applications and information request forms may be obtained from the Office of Graduate Studies.

Students from U.S. Institutions:

There are no test requirements for students with degrees from U.S. institutions as long as the degree programs are fully accredited (ABET accredited for engineering program). Students are expected to have completed their degree in good academic standing or to be in the process of completing their degree and be in good academic standing. Students may select to provide GRE test results if they feel this can help their admission, or improve their chances of obtaining financial support.

  • M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering:
    • The student’s prior institution must be ABET accredited. If not, GRE test results are required.

Students from Foreign Institutions:

Foreign students without degrees from United States institutions are required to show a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (79 Internet-based, 213 Computer based), or IELTS 6.0.

  • M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering:
    • A GRE general examination score is required. The minimum required GRE scores are 150 (450) on verbal reasoning, 148 (600) on quantitative reasoning, and a combined verbal and quantitative reasoning score of 310 (1200). Also, a minimum GRE Writing Assessment (Analytical) of 2.5 is needed.
  • M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics:
    • A GRE general examination score is recommended, particularly for students requesting financial support.
  • Ph.D. in Materials Engineering:
    • A GRE general examination score is required.
  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering:
    • A GRE general examination score is required.
