Building smarter bridges to enhance the nation’s infrastructure is the focus of the BRIDGE-ing Big Data Workshop, Oct. 8-9, 2015 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

The workshop is coordinated by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering, and will explore how current information related to bridge health, as well as information that could be generated, can be used to effectively manage and maintain these important assets. Concepts using Big Data technologies and techniques to optimize bridge management processes will also be addressed.

Workshop participants will include bridge engineers and administrators, owners, designers, constructors and researchers, along with those involved in Big Data generation, collection, mining and decision-making.

The goal of the workshop is to create a public-private consortium of representatives from industry, organizations and academia to help develop and innovate the next generation of intelligent bridge management systems.

“We understand the challenges of our nation’s aging infrastructure, the increased demand on our roads and bridges, and shrinking resources, and will be discussing and brainstorming ways to enhance the melding of Big Data and information technology with bridge safety and management,” said Daniel Linzell, chair of the UNL Department of Civil Engineering and lead workshop organizer.

Confirmed speakers and panelists include former U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Datafloq founder Mark van Rijmenam, New York Times technology columnist and reporter Nick Bilton, global futurist and author Jack Uldrich, and The DATUM Group CEO Rory O’Rourke.
