Rail traffic and commerce is an integral part of the United States economy, so any component failure on rail cars causing delays in transit can have serious financial ramifications.

Hamid Sharif, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Michael Hempel, research assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, have led a team of UNL researchers that has designed a wireless system allowing engineers to monitor rail components in real time, keeping these incidents to a minimum.
