Inclusive Excellence

Engineering – at its core – is a service and helping profession. As such, serving society requires in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the various cultures, differences, and experiences that make up our world. Appreciating, understanding, and accepting the collective experiences of the populations we serve will undoubtedly result in better engineering solutions.

In college, you will connect with people who are different from you. Listen to them. Learn from them. You will be amazed at the depth of knowledge you will receive if you learn and listen. As an engineer, learning and listening are two critical elements to understanding cultures other than your own. Simply put, engineers cannot afford to lead society towards solutions that do not take into account the social environment around them.

Exposure Exposure

Student is open to learning about inclusion. Student demonstrates knowledge of the value of differences and participation in experiences to increase understanding.

Examples where further growth can happen:
  1. Visit/familiarize oneself with services/programming offered by resource centers on/off campus.
  2. Attend events organized by resource centers, inclusive groups.
  3. Meet someone from a different state/country/ethnicity.
  4. Participate in some other activity that demonstrates exposure.

Engagement Engagement

Student engages in self-initiated participation in experiences that challenge their perspectives. Student can articulate their own identity and culture and how it connects to others. Students can identify opportunities for growth.

Examples where further growth can happen:
  1. Engage in self-initiated participation in experiences related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, that challenge perspectives
  2. Articulate own identity and culture and how it connects to others
  3. Identify the opportunities for growth

Transformation check-circle-1(status)

Student demonstrates growth or change in values, beliefs or perspectives. Student actively works to create an environment of inclusion that leads to creativity and innovation in their own spaces.

Examples where further growth can happen:
  1. Demonstrate growth, change in values, beliefs and perspectives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  2. Actively work to create an inclusive environment that leads to creativity and innovation in own spaces.
