Your Guide to Career Success


Your career success matters. It’s never too early to start working toward the career you want. In fact, starting off on the right foot your first year can put you leaps and bounds ahead of the competition to land you the job you want. Our recommendations for launching your career success are listed by year below.

1st-Year Students

Explore engineering and build yourself a strong foundation.
□ Take ENGR 100: Freshman Engineering Seminar in the Fall
□ Create your resume – attend a resume workshop or get yours reviewed through Career Coaching
□ Create your profile on Husker Hire Link and upload your resume
□ Attend Engineering Study Stops early in the semester to start off on the right foot academically
□ Attend the Fall Industry Trip and Spring Break Industry Trip
□ Attend a Career Fair to network, to practice introducing yourself, and to research companies
□ Meet with & get to know your Academic Advisor each semester, who will be a great resource
Get involved with at least one student organization, community service, or project team, and stay involved
□ Attend E-Week in February to network with industry, fellow students, and the community
□ Plan for an internship or related work experience over the summer

2nd-Year Students

Build your skills and grow your network.
□ Take ENGR 2000: Professionalism and Global Perspective
□ Attend Engineering Study Stops for assistance in your general engineering courses
□ Update your resume – have your resume reviewed through Career Coaching
□ Update your profile and resume in Husker Hire Link
□ Maintain your grades so you can be professionally admitted to your major junior year
□ Explore your strengths and skills through Career Coaching
□ Make use of Career Fair Prep workshops
□ Attend a Career Fair to search for internship or co-op opportunities
□ Connect with at least two faculty members and maintain meaningful professional contact
□ Consider attending the Spring Break Industry Trip
□ Get further involved in a student organization: serve on a committee, project, or in a leadership position
□ Meet with your Academic Advisor each semester to make sure you’re on track
□ Attend E-Week in February to grow your network
□ Plan for an internship, related work experience, or research position (REU or UCARE) over the summer

3rd-Year Students

Find your niche and improve your skills. Plan for at least one working term this year.
□ Update your resume with new skills and experience
□ Update your Husker Hire Link profile, & search for internship or co-op opportunities early
□ Complete a Mock Interview to hone your interviewing skills prior to the career fair
□ Make use of Career Fair Prep workshops
□ Attend a Career Fair to search for internship or co-op opportunities, or explore graduate/professional school
□ Discuss electives that will expand your technical and communication skills with your Academic Advisor
□ Consider attending the Spring Break Industry Trip
□ Further connect with your 2+ faculty members, and ask for a reference if needed
□ Start to identify potential mentors in your professional network, and maintain contact
□ Plan for an internship, co-op, or research position (REU or UCARE) over the summer

4th-Year / 5th-Year Students & Beyond

Prepare for the job search and success at your first job.
□ Complete a graduation check with your Academic Advisor
□ Fine tune your resume with any new details, skills, and experience
□ Update your Husker Hire Link profile and use it to search for job opportunities
□ Make use of Career Fair Prep workshops to fill any gaps in interview skills, job search techniques, etc.
□ Attend a Career Fair to begin your job search
□ Consider attending the Spring Break Industry Trip
□ Apply to graduate or professional school and take entrance exams if required
□ Attend workshops for graduating students to prepare you for success at your first job
□ Ask your faculty members and professional network to serve as references for you
□ Use your professional network to assist with your job search
□ Prepare to negotiate your offer(s) – get assistance through Career Coaching
□ Fill out all graduation surveys through UNL, UNO, the College of Engineering, and your department
