Walter Scott, Jr.
WALTER SCOTT, JR. is Chairman Emeritus of Peter Kiewit Sons’, Inc. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Level 3 Communications, Inc., a telecommuncations company spun off from Kiewit in 1998. Mr. Scott received his civil engineering degree from Colorado State University in 1953.
While pursuing his degree, he worked for Kiewit’s construction operations during summer breaks. Following graduation, he briefly worked in Kiewit’s Omaha-area operations before entering the U.S. Air Force. After two years of service as an air installation officer, he returned to Kiewit in 1956 and had subsequent engineering assignments on projects from California to New York. He transferred to Kiewit’s Cleveland District in 1958 and was named District Manager in 1962.
In 1964, Mr. Scott was elected a Vice President of the company and transferred to headquarters in Omaha to assume responsibility for construction operations east of the Mississippi River. He was elected Executive Vice President in 1965 and given the additional responsibility of overseeing construction operations in the eastern provinces of Canada. He was first elected to the Kiewit board of directors in 1964 and was named President of the company in 1979. When Peter Kiewit died later that same year, Mr. Scott was selected to succeed him as Chairman. He served as Chairman and CEO until April 1998.
In addition to serving on the Kiewit and Level 3 boards, Mr. Scott is also a director of Berkshire Hathaway, MidAmerican Energy Holdings, and Valmont Industries. He is active in community affairs and director or board chairman of a number of charitable and educational non-profits.
