Career Fair: FAQs for Students

The Durham School holds a special career fair in Omaha each year to provide networking opportunities for students and employers.

Provided below are answers to the questions most asked concerning the career fair. Please call (402) 554-3918, or e-mail Christine Warren,, for additional information.

Who should attend the Career Fair?

Students invited to attend are those enrolled in The Durham School programs: Architectural Engineering, Construction Management or Construction Engineering; students who are enrolled in Civil Engineering programs; and, students interested in careers in any of the fields mentioned above.

What should I wear to the career fair?

Career fair dress should be either "business casual" or "business." If you have a suit, plan to wear that to the fair. If you do not have a suit, dress slacks, a button-down shirt and a tie are appropriate for men and dress slacks or a skirt and a button-down shirt or knit top are appropriate for women. Jeans, gym shoes, torn clothing and skirts that fall above the knee are NOT appropriate dress for a career fair, even if you are just visiting for class participation credit.

What should I bring to the career fair?

Be sure to bring copies of your (error-free) resume, as well as a portfolio or folder to carry your resume in and place business cards into. Also remember to bring a pen or pencil, a notepad and breath mints.

I've never been to a career fair before. What do I say to employers?

Prepare a brief 30-second "commercial" about who you are and why you are interested in the company. Practice your commercial before you come to the fair. Please attend The Durham School's preparation events to assist with the development of your resume/cover letter and to schedule a mock interview with business/industry representatives so you are prepared. The schedule of these events will be released in July.

How should I prepare for a career fair?

In addition to attending the Career Fair Prep Workshop, view the list of participating employers and begin researching those that interest you in advance of the career fair. Visit company websites. Check current job openings to get an idea of what skills and education are required to work for that company.
