MAE Student, Patrick MacBride, Awarded 2013 IES Young Professional Scholarship

Patrick MacBrideCongratulations to Patrick MacBride, Master of Architectural Engineering student for being awarded the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Young Professional Scholarship. Patrick was one of four emerging students from across the nation to win this honor. As this year’s champion of the Howard Brandston Student Lighting Design competition, Patrick will attend the annual IES conference in Huntington Beach, CA. The Young Professional Scholarship will help offset the costs to attend this conference.

Below is Patrick’s personal story related to the award.

I walked into Dr. Water office during the first week of the semester to, somewhat ashamedly, ask for some financial assistance to attend the IES annual conference. I had already been invited, and had my entrance fee waved as part of winning the Howard Brandston Lighting Design Grant and a Besal Award, which was already very generous. However, flying out to California for four days was still quite a ways outside of my ramen noodle level budget. Dr. Waters told me the IES Young Professionals Fund was my best shot. The deadline, as then often do, approached a little faster than I would have liked but it was nothing a few sleepless nights couldn't manage. The submission was limited to a one page cover letter and a one page essay. I usually pray for homework assignments that short, but I must have written 6 or 7 different drafts before I had everything worded just right. I ended up submitting everything around six hours before the deadline. I then spent the next few days keeping my fingers crossed before I got the good news.
