The Norfolk, Nebraska, area is getting ready for “game day” on Friday, Oct. 9 when more than 500 first-year UNL College of Engineering students will tour businesses and industries in the community.

Organized by the Norfolk Area Economic Development Council, “Norfolk Area Game Day” is a daylong learning opportunity for freshmen from Nebraska Engineering’s Lincoln and Omaha campuses. This trip is a requirement for the ENGR 10 class on the Lincoln campus. Omaha campus students will also participate.

The college’s Fall Industry Trip, now in its fourth year, has included Grand Island, Columbus and Omaha. Norfolk was selected for 2015 because of the city’s excellent business climate and distinctive engineering businesses.

“Norfolk Area Game Day is a great opportunity for our new engineering students to learn more about career opportunities in Norfolk and the northeast Nebraska area while touring some pretty special sites,” said Michael Loehring, senior director for student services. “This is a free trip for students allowing them to connect with professional engineers. Students will not only learn a great deal about engineering but will also gain key connections.”

Students will arrive in Norfolk at 10:30 a.m. on nine 56-passenger motor coaches and tour Contitech, JEO, Medtronic, Nebraska Public Power District, City of Norfolk, Nucor Cold Finish, Nucor Detailing Center, Nucor Steel and Smeal Fire Apparatus. Additional activities include a tailgate-style lunch and a career fair at Veterans Memorial Park. At 3 p.m., students will depart for their home campuses.
