Life in Engineering: Dr Shane Farritor

Nebraska is special. I think we are born makers. I think from a very early age… you’re handed a pair of vise grips and you’re expected to fix things.

Professor of Mechanical & Materials Engineering

Dr. Farritor is a multi-faceted professor who teaches, conducts research and is an entrepreneur. He also initiated the Nebraska Innovation Studio (Makers space) on Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln. The studio is a place where students, faculty/staff and area residents can come and create: from woodworking and technology to 3D printings. He describes the maker space as being similar to a gym: “You can take classes and learn skills and become better at things, and as importantly, you get to be around people who are also interested in what you’re doing.”

Beyond teaching, Shane is also involved in his own research. In particular, he works with surgical robotics, creating small robots to insert into a body for surgery. “If you take 300,000 people per year and take them from 10 days in hospital to two days in hospital, you’ve made a really significant impact.”
