E-Day Open House is Friday on Nebraska Innovation Campus

The UNL College of Engineering’s annual E-Day Open House moves to the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center in Lincoln, showcasing the work of current students who are “Engineering New Horizons” and show prospective students the many possibilities within the college.

This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17. The event is free and open to the public.

E-Day Open House is an opportunity to spotlight the design work of senior engineering students and various student organizations, including:

  • A new packaging design to increase the grocery store shelf life of ConAgra’s Lofthouse Sugar Cookies
  • A design and fabrication of a new chair base and tray to give a young cerebral palsy patient needed mobility as she grows
  • Improved personal protective equipment protocols and designs for health-care workers who treat patients with ebola
  • Solar-powered water purifiers that can be shipped with greater cost-effectiveness to developing nations
  • Teams of civil engineers analyzing the causes of flooding at the intersections of 16th and X and 16th and Y streets and offering solutions to the problem
  • A system of electronic monitoring bracelets and software to make for a safer and more efficient child collection and pickup process in a daycare environment; and
  • Numerous designs of innovative Net-Zero, energy self-sustaining homes for Habitat for Humanity-Omaha.

Dr. Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, author of “The Physics of NASCAR” will be the keynote speaker. Leslie-Pelecky is a former nanomaterials researcher and educator at UNL who is known nationally for her work in science education and outreach and for her research into magnetic materials and the application of nanomaterials to medical diagnosis and treatment processes.

The Open House will also include hands-on activities, information sessions geared for students in grades 9-11 and a high school bridge building competition. Parking is available at the Nebraska Innovation Conference Center.
