P3 - 2016 Project Overview

In the summer of 2016, 13 student interns participated in UNL’s Partners in Pollution Prevention Program. Students worked with businesses to research methods of reducing waste, increasing safety, reducing hazardous material handling, and preventing pollution. 

They also assisted with a wide variety of environmental projects focusing on education, energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management. Each student prepared a report of proposed improvements, detailing the economic and environmental benefits of implementing their suggestions. 

The following project overviews describe the interns' projects and recommendations.

1. Sarah Porath - Neapco
   Performed energy audits for an auto products corporation and suggested pollution prevention strategies.


2. Elizabeth Boschult - Insulfoam
   Performed energy and waste audits for a foam insulation company and suggested pollution prevention strategies.


3. Nic Meyer - Molex LLC
   Performed energy and waste audits for a moldable thermoplastic company and suggested pollution prevention strategies.


4. Than Nguyen - Omaha Steel Casting Company
   Performed energy and waste audits for a steel casting company and suggested pollution prevention strategies.


5. Julian Davis - Nebraska Ethanol Board
   Worked on a project to help agricultural producers comply with the EPA’s Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures regulations.


6. Courtney Kinser - Tyson Fresh Meats
   Performed water, electricity and natural gas audits for a beef packing company and suggested pollution prevention strategies.


7. Samuel Hansen - Greater Omaha Packing
   Performed energy and water audits for a beef packing company and suggested pollution prevention strategies.


8. David Hansen - Ogallala Waste Treatment Facility, Arnold Waste Treatment Facility
   Conducted detailed energy audits for two small community wastewater treatment plants


9. Jack Micek - Nebraska Energy Office
   Conducted energy use audits at multiple wastewater treatment facilities in Nebraska


10. Ranil Philipose - Nebraska Energy Office
    Conducted energy use audits at multiple wastewater treatment facilities in Nebraska


11. Erika Bowman - UNL Extension and Agricultural Producers in Western Nebraska
    Analyzed irrigation systems for water and energy conservation.


12. Jacob Rix - UNL Extension and Agricultural Producers in West Central Nebraska
    Analyzed irrigation systems for water and energy conservation.


13. Mara Zelt - UNL Extension and Agricultural Producers in Areas Surrounding Holt County
    Analyzed irrigation systems for water and energy conservation.
