John A. Smith

John A. Smith photoJohn A. Smith, professor and machinery systems engineer, has been based at the Panhandle Research & Extension Center in Scottsbluff. His time with UNL has officially been devoted to a mix of research and extension activities. He has focused on management of machinery for field crops for the Panhandle area; planting and tillage equipment for sugarbeets and dry edible beans; and harvest systems for dry edible beans.


Smith was recognized for professional contributions including ASAE Educational Aids Blue Ribbon Award for Publications: Manuals and Workbooks, for the “Sugarbeet Production Guide” he co-authored in 2002. He was part of the Biological Systems Engineering faculty that earned the university-wide Departmental Teaching Award for the 2001-02 academic year. He has been honored with Cooperative Extension Excellence in Team Programming Awards, an IANR Team Effort Award, and the Epsilon Sigma Delta "Team Award" for Research and Extension.

He earned his M.S. in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Wyoming–Laramie and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tri-State University in Angola, Ind.
