2012 Summer P3 Interns’ Project Overviews
In the summer of 2012, seven student interns and one graduate student assistant participated in UNL’s Partners in Pollution Prevention Program. Students worked with businesses to research methods of reducing waste and preventing pollution. They also assisted with a wide variety of environmental projects focusing on education, energy efficiency, water conservation and waste management. Each student prepared a report of proposed improvements, detailing the economic and environmental benefits of implementing their suggestions.

- Martin Gakuria - Lincoln Water System, Lincoln
Conducted research to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to infrastructure growth.
- Aina Kekilova - Multiple Projects in Lincoln and Battle Creek
Analyzed lighting system energy efficiency for small community waste water treatment plant and worked along with graduate assistant Mike Florek to aggregate data from class assessment project.
- Jacob Martinez - NDEQ - Multiple Projects in Lincoln, Battle Creek, Malcolm and Wahoo
Conducted detailed energy audits for three small community wastewater treatment plants.
- Keith Miller - UNL Extension and Agricultural Producers in Clay County Nebraska
Analyzed irrigation systems for water/energy conservation.
- Alex Sellers - Gavilon LLC in Omaha, Grand Island, Hastings, NE and St. Joseph, MO
Assisted company in furthering sustainability initiatives by analyzing energy and waste consumption in grain elevators and fertilizer manufacturing plants.
