1. Final dates for the 2010 Summer Learning Institute: The 2010 date for the SLI has been confirmed with University Housing for July 7-10, 2010. All instructors and administrators are invited to attend. Registration information will be provided online during the Spring Semester. 2. Final dates for the 2010 Summer Research Experience The Summer Research Experience is for S.T.E.P. students who have been admitted and will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, College of Engineering, for Fall 2010. The program dates are May 31 – July 2, 2010. Program requirements and application materials will be made available online February 2010. 3. MATLAB Textbook A modification has been initiated to the MATLAB course. The Computer Science and Engineering Department has decided to stay with the modification in the future. The main impact for S.T.E.P. is the change of text. The following text will be used: Engineering Computation with MATLAB, 2nd Edition David M. 4. New Qualifying Program Document The Qualifying Program Document on the S.T.E.P. Web site is not up-to-date. A new document is in the process of being created and will be distributed upon its completion. Please look for the updated version in the next couple weeks on the S.T.E.P. 4. Transfer Course Equivalencies The University of Nebraska has created a course equivalency list between UNL and many post-secondary institutions. Be sure to check transfer guides for specific degrees because some equivalent transfer courses may not apply toward a particular degree. For your specific institution log-on, go to http://admissions.unl.edu/tequiv/index.aspx. **********************************************************
5. Transferring Credit S.T.E.P. students are encouraged to contact a College of Engineering Representative to review their transcript prior to applying to UNL. The representative for the College of Engineering is Lori Straatmann. Students should contact her at lstraatmann2@unl.edu and be prepared to provide her their transcript and intended major. **********************************************************
6. 2010 Scholarship Opportunities S.T.E.P. students who will attend UNL during the Fall 2010 semester are encouraged to look into scholarship opportunities at UNL. “For full scholarship consideration, transfer students must complete and submit an Admissions Application, Personal Statement (Nebraska residents only), and any additional supporting documentation to the UNL Office of Admissions by March 1 for students beginning in the fall semester and October 1st for students beginning in the spring semester.” (UNL Web site) For more information regarding UNL’s scholarship opportunities, go to http://www.unl.edu/scholfa/transfer_students.shtml. **********************************************************
7. NISTS Transfer Conference The National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students is holding its 8th annual conference: January 27 – 29 in Dallas, Tex. This is a premier conference of scholars, educators, and leaders in the field of college transfer theory and practice. 8. ASEE Annual Conference The 117th American Society for Engineering Education Conference and Exposition will take place June 20-23 in Louisville, Ky. “The ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition is the only conference dedicated to all disciplines of engineering education. It is committed to fostering the exchange of ideas, enhancing teaching methods and curriculum, and providing prime networking opportunities for engineering and technology education stakeholders such as deans, faculty members and industry and government representatives.” (ASEE Website) For more information log-on to http://www.asee.org/conferences/annual/2010. ***********************************************************
9. E-Week Open House S.T.E.P. students are invited to attend the College of Engineering’s E-Week Open House on Friday, April 23. E-Week Open House is when “senior engineering students and graduate students display their research projects, corporate representatives host booths to promote their companies, and high school students partake in information sessions and hands-on activities that highlight the benefits of becoming an engineer.”(UNL’s Web site). 10. Study Abroad Opportunity The College of Engineering is providing S.T.E.P. students an opportunity to study abroad in Brazil, France, Greece, Sweden or China. 11. S.T.E.P. Student Registration Each semester/quarter, instructors will receive a packet containing College of Engineering Information Request Cards. We ask that students complete these cards. Completing the card is optional, however providing student contact information will greatly impact how and when we are able to connect with and recruit S.T.E.P. students to UNL.
