As the school year ends, many awards honor the achievements of Nebraska Engineering students and faculty. Spring 2009 accolades include:

Paul Rogge, a mechanical engineering student from Lincoln, earned a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Naval Research (ONR). In April 2009, Rogge was one of approximately 200 students nationwide earning new three-year NDSEG Fellowships to pursue doctoral degrees in, or closely related to, areas of DoD interest-to increase the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance. Recipients were chosen for their demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. Each fellow receives full tuition and required fees, as well as more than $30,000 per academic year as stipend.

Mechanical engineering seniors Evan Luxon and Lee Redden received Graduate Fellowships from the National Science Foundation. Luxon, from Omaha, and Redden, from Kearney, will each gain a $30,000 annual stipend, a $10,500 cost-of-education allowance, and a $1,000 one-time international travel allowance, as well as TeraGrid Supercomputer access. The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program helps ensure the vitality of science and engineering in the United States by reinforcing its diversity. It recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. NSF Fellows are expected to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. These individuals will be crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation's technological infrastructure and national security as well as contributing to the economic well-being of society at large.

Andrew P. Shroll, a senior who majors in mechanical engineering, was one of 23 Chancellor's Scholars in 2009 who have maintained a 4.0 grade-point average.

At UNL's 2009 Honors Convocation, several College of Engineering faculty received honors. Distinguished Teaching awards went to Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, assistant professor of civil engineering, and Mustafa Gursoy, assistant professor of electrical engineering. Charles Riedesel, assistant professor with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, earned the James V. Griesen Award for Exemplary Service to Students. Viacheslav I. Adamchuk with the Department of Biological Systems Engineering gained the Susan J. Rosowski Associate Professorship. The Rosowski professorship is a new distinction recognizing faculty at the associate professor level who have achieved distinguished records of scholarship or creative activity and show exceptional promise for future excellence.

At an awards banquet, UNL's Division of Student Affairs announced its annual Outstanding Student Leadership Award and Chris Reznicek, a senior EE major, was the 2009 male winner. The honor recognizes students for development of their fellow students' leadership qualities in academic, co-curricular, and/or extracurricular activities at UNL. Recipients can gain a scholarship for one semester of in-state tuition during the student's senior year at UNL.
