A group of 20 Baja SAE team members took three cars to the annual Midnight Mayhem event Oct. 1 in Louisville, Kentucky, and picked up five top-10 finishes in four catergories.
Nebraska Engineering students entered three of the 100 cars that took part in the competition, which unlike typical spring semester events, focuses solely on the driving in a Baja SAE competition – three small dynamic events to test specific aspects and a four-hour endurance race.
The Louisville competition is the only Baja SAE event held at night on a track illuminated by lights.
The No. 65 car, the team's top competition vehicle, placed highly in all four categories – second in both endurance and acceleration, sixth in maneuverability and eighth in BajaCross.
A team of students who normally wouldn't get to drive at a competition ran a backup car and the No. 77 vehicle picked up a third place in acceleration and was 16th in BajaCross.
A freshmen-only team, the No. 3 car, finished 10th in maneuverability and 11th in acceleration.
The Baja SAE team will compete again late in the spring semester, with events April 27-30 in Gorman, California; May 25-28 in Pittsburg, Kansas; and June 7-10 in Peoria, Illinois.
