Bernie Gehrki, AIA, NCARB, is a senior vice president and operations director with HDR who oversees operations for 250 Architecture staff in five locations within the Central U.S. Based in Omaha, NE, he has been in the architecture profession for 38 years, 28 of those with HDR. In his current position he is responsible for recruiting and retaining staff, and maintaining quality in all aspects of business performance within the region, including client relationships, project delivery, contracts and financial results.

Experienced in the design and construction of healthcare, educational and commercial projects, Bernie’s background includes schematic design, design development, and construction administration services. A registered architect in 20 states, he is a designated member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB). Throughout his tenure at HDR, he has led a multitude of project teams as a principal-in-charge, project manager and healthcare planner, and has been instrumental in managing long-standing relationships and projects for legacy HDR clients.

Staying connected to the heart of the architecture profession, he is involved in training project managers and enjoys presenting on industry topics, along with teaching a professional practice course at UNL. A published author, he has shared his knowledge of healthcare design and delivery in several publications. Bernie remains passionate about the essence of architecture and his particular passion is conceptualizing and sketching architectural details.
