Call for Papers:

Smart city embraces intelligent services with connecting a wide variety of physical objects in city wide, in order to improve governance and service delivery, offer swift seamless mobility, and achieve easy access to urban public facilities, affordable housing, quality healthcare, education, and living in highly populated areas. Smart city is expected to connect home facilities, electricity power system, industrial manufacturing, transportation, food and water environment, and personal mobile devices.

It is predicted that over 50 billion devices will be connected by 2020. As a result, an increasing volume of data will be rapidly produced with a high diversity. Furthermore, moving this big volume of data from the devices to a centralized control or data center for processing and analysis will increase latency and occupy enormous network bandwidth. To this end, edge computing emerges to boost smart city in various aspects. Since the smart city environments are required to be self-monitoring, self-directing, self-organizing, self-diagnosing, self-healing, the task of edge-assisted data analytics and computing will incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning. Meanwhile, most of smart city applications require real time actions, which will be highly supported by edge computing.

Therefore, it is urgent to push analytics and intelligence from the center to the edge of the network. Edge nodes act as the bridge connecting devices and the centralized control or data center, and can reduce the processing latency due to its physical proximity feature, i.e., the edge of network. However, there are several challenging issue for smart city due to the limited or resource-constrained devices, which are not capable of performing intelligent and advanced analytics. A nearby edge node will assist devices to achieve the trade-off between efficiency and cost. Developing topology control and network function virtualization may leverage the edge analytics performance. In addition, security and privacy concerns are rising when edge nodes neither are fully controlled by trusted centralized authority, nor have strong resilience against malicious attacks. It is essential to consider these issues when designing edge analytics and computing for smart city.

This workshop aims to bring together the technologists and researchers who share interests in the area of edge computing for smart city applications, as well as explore new venues of collaboration. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of edge analytics and computing architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications in smart city. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental research, and work in-progress for edge analytics and computing related issues in the context of smart city.

• Fault tolerance and reliability for edge-assisted smart city applications

• Security, privacy and trust for big data and edge computing

Submission Details:

Papers should be written in English conforming to the IEEE standard conference format (8.5" x 11" - US letter, Two-Column). The initial submission for review will be no more than 8 pages, but no fewer than 4 pages. The final manuscript for publication will be limited up to 8 IEEE pages. Additional charges may apply for additional pages.

Conference content will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore as well as other Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) databases.

Each accepted paper must be presented at the workshop by one of the co-authors or a third party, otherwise it will not be indexed and archived through IEEE Xplore.

Only timely submissions through EDAS will be accepted.
