Mike Loehring, who in the past five years served in multiple leadership roles in the College of Engineering, died on Saturday, Oct. 13 after a long battle with cancer. He was 37.

In his most recent role, senior associate to the dean, Loehring worked closely with Dean Lance C. Pérez to offer strategic insights and guidance on how the College can better attract and serve undergraduate and graduate students.

Loehring came to the College of Engineering in 2013 as senior director of student services and helped to found Engineering Student Services, which enhances the undergraduate experience for students on both the City (Lincoln) and Scott (Omaha) campuses and oversees the recruiting of students to the College.

In that role, Loehring also led the implementation of the Complete Engineer Initiative, the Grand Challenges Scholars Program and the Senior Design Showcase, taught sections of a freshman engineering seminar course, and was the adviser for the Nebraska Theme Park Club.

“Mike personified the servant-leader. Anybody who worked with him knew they were valued and respected, and always embraced with his never-ending energy and positivity,” Pérez said.

“Mike created a dedicated community of staff who transformed the undergraduate student experience in the College of Engineering, including many programs and initiatives that attracted more students to the College and ensured their success when they arrived.”

Prior to joining the College of Engineering, Loehring was executive director of enrollment management at Angelo State University in Texas. He graduated from Central Missouri University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations and later earned a master’s from CMU in college student personnel administration.

Loehring is survived by his wife, Adrien, and three daughters.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln.
