Minors to enhance an engineering degree
The UNL College of Engineering encourages our students to enhance their major/academic program by considering a minor, allowing for advanced knowledge in specific areas. The minors below provide added expertise in fast-growing career areas. College and faculty advisers can help you determine if a minor will benefit your education and how to get started.
Biomedical Engineering
UNL Catalog - Course Requirements
With a minor in Biomedical Engineering (BME), you can increase opportunities to take part in one of the fastest growing areas of engineering research and industrial growth. A BME minor, coupled with a degree in one of the engineering majors offered by the College of Engineering (on City Campus), can lead to careers in medical research, teaching, industrial and government health care, and in medical practice. Ever-growing applications of BME include tissue engineering, biomaterials, biomechanics, biosensors, bioinstrumentation, nanobiology, medical imaging, robotics and ergonomics, as well as clinical, orthopedic and rehabilitation engineering.
The BME minor requires 24 credit hours and is multidisciplinary. Courses in biology and physiology are required, as well as a minimum of two biomedical engineering courses from outside your engineering major. Depending on your major and the choice of electives within your major, from two to seven additional courses may be needed to complete this minor.
Construction Management

This minor is for engineering and architecture majors only. Coursework includes such areas as business, communications, construction estimating, productivity, planing and scheduling, and management essentials for organizations.
Engineering Leadership
UNL Catalog - Course Requirements
With the college’s Engineering Leadership Minor, you can complete a series of leadership, project management and interpersonal skills courses. You’ll use experiential learning strategies and subject area knowledge gained in courses from your major, along with strategies and skills to be an effective leader in the engineering profession. The minor combines new and existing courses:
- New courses center on leadership, management and interpersonal skill needed of engineering students.
- Existing courses consist of leadership and interpersonal skills courses (led by faculty in the Department of Agriculture Leadership, Education and Communication).
This minor contributes to the National Academy of Engineers call to expose engineering students to formal studies of leadership development (NAE, 2004) and the college’s mission to graduate the Complete Engineer.
Engineering Mechanics

This minor included 12 credit hours beyond the regular undergraduate engineering mechanics sequence (MECH 223 Engineering Statics, MECH 325 Mechanics of Elastic Bodies, and MECH 373 Engineering Dynamics). These may be chosen from the following courses with content in engineering mechanics.
Environmental Engineering
UNL Catalog - Course Requirements
A minor in Environmental Engineering will provide a comprehensive exposure to a broad range of environmental topics, and an understanding of the fundamental concepts of environmental engineering, including sustainability; water quality; water and wastewater treatment; air quality; and solid and hazardous waste management. The minor includes a total of 18 hours of courses including 9 hours of required courses and 9 hours of elective courses. The minor is offered on both campuses in Lincoln and Omaha.
International Engineering

This minor is designed to encourage and recognize undergraduate students who enhance their engineering education with courses and experiences consistent with the global nature of engineering and the economy. A minor in International Engineering can increase your marketability in an increasingly energy-dependent, environmentally aware world. This minor is for engineering majors only.
Robotics Engineering
UNL Catalog - Course Requirements
The College of Engineering offers a minor in Robotics Engineering, incorporating courses from mechanical engineering, computer engineering and electrical engineering. The minor is available for students on both of the college's campuses in Lincoln and Omaha. A robotics engineer designs and maintains robots, develops new applications and conducts research to discover and enhance the potential for robotics. According to data from the Robotic industry Association and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for robotics engineering expertise is expected to continue growing.
Software Development
UNL Catalog - Course Requirements
This 15-credit-hour minor includes CSCE courses in coding, data analysis, data structures and algorithms, internet systems and programming, and a lab project. This minor is not open to computer science or computer engineering majors.
