Phase one renovation of engineering facilities begins

The upgrade of Nebraska engineering facilities will begin in summer 2019 with the demolition and rebuilding of the Link, which connects Nebraska Hall to the Scott Engineering Center. The project will also include a renovation of Scott Engineering Center.

Work on the $75 million phase one renovation and expansion of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Engineering has started.

Approved by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Aug. 3, 2018, the project will create and update spaces in the Scott Engineering Center and the Link, a 34-year-old structure that connects the Scott building to Nebraska Hall. When complete, the updated facilities will benefit students, faculty and research.

“This project is the beginning of a transformational change for our students, faculty and staff and for Nebraska engineering industry,” said Lance C. Pérez, dean of the College of Engineering. “The upgraded facilities will enable the college to better accomplish our missions in education, research and outreach, as well as accommodate growth in undergraduate and graduate student enrollment and faculty research.”

The college is providing updates about the project online. The college is also planning a second phase, $85 million expansion to create Kiewit Hall. The building will serve as engineering’s academic hub and will house Lincoln-based construction management programs.

The phase one project will cause disruptions in pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the work area. Key closings and other details include:

  • The Link closed Sept. 20 for demolition.

  • A temporary sidewalk is in place on 16th Street with overhead protection.

  • Parking will close Oct. 7 lot on the east side of Scott Engineering Center. An announcement will be made with the lot reopens.

  • Link demolition will be completed approximately on Oct. 25.

  • Site excavation will begin approximately Oct. 28.

  • Bike racks that were under the Link have been moved to the west and north sides of Nebraska Hall. All bikes that were on the racks before they were moved are available at the University Police Department, 300 N. 17th St.
