Research Interests:

Clio Azina is involved in new material research. She shows particular interest to thermal transfers within materials. Her research involves multi-materials and thin films, obtained using various techniques, as well as their chemical, structural, microstructural and physical characterization.She has expertise in ceramic-metal interactions and interfaces, CVD and PVD deposition, powder metallurgy and a large palette of characterization techniques. During her Ph.D., her research was divided in two sub-sections: the synthesis of diamond films through the use of laser-assisted combustion CVD and the synthesis of optimized metal matrix composite materials through hot-pressing techniques. The synthesis of the optimized composites involves the insertion of alloying elements in the metal matrix material to induce the creation of carbide interphase. She participated in the development of the solid-liquid co-existent phase process, which allows the in-situ creation of carbide interphases, in MMCs, during the sintering step. While the use of the solid-liquid co-existent phase process has been reported for aluminum-based composites, Clio Azina was the first to adapt and optimize this process to copper-based composites, with very promising results. At LANE lab (UNL), she worked under the supervision of Pr. Yongfeng Lu on the processing and characterization of diamond films. The synthesis of the optimized composite materials took place at the Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux, in France under the supervision of Dr. Jean-François Silvain, as part of the French - American scientific and academic partnership established in 2009. In March 2018, she joined the Energy Materials Unit of the Thin film Physics Division at Linköpings Universitet, in Sweden, as a Post-Doctoral Researcher. Her research here, involves the synthesis and characterization of MAX phase and phase changing thin films. In January 2020, she joined the Chair of Materials Chemistry of RWTH Aachen University, in Germany, for a placement of 3 months. This placement is in the framework of the Medard W. Welch International Scholarship that she received in July 2019 from the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA). At RWTH Aachen University, she develops diffusion barriers that are introduced between V2AlC MAX phase coatings and Zr substrates in order to evaluate the thermal and chemical stability of all interfaces. Her goal is to provide material solutions for avoiding or delaying diffusion processes at the atomistic scale.

Biography:

Clio Azina moved to France in 2008 to pursue her secondary education in the fields of chemistry and physics. After obtaining her Diplome d'Education Universitaire Général in 2010 from the University of Rennes 1, she obtained her Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics and Chemistry in 2012 from the Université de Bordeaux 1. Her Master's degree specializing in Chemistry and Physical Chemistry of Materials with a special emphasis on Inorganic materials, was delivered by the Université de Bordeaux. Clio Azina has carried out several internships in different fields of chemistry ranging from emulsions and soft matter to ceramic and metal matrix composites. She successfully defended her Dual-PhD in Electrical Engineering (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Condensed Matter Chemistry (Université de Bordeaux) on November 21st 2017. She is currently employed at Linköpings Universitet, in Sweden as a Post-Doctoral Researcher.
