Scholarship

Does this scholarship stack with other awards?

The Kiewit Scholars scholarship applies last-in after institutional scholarships. It covers what is left of tuition and fees after your other UNL-based scholarships are applied. For example, if you have a Regents or David Distinguished scholarship, Kiewit Scholars will cover the rest of tuition and fees not covered by the Regents or David Distinguished. Institutional scholarships include those given to you by UNL, the College of Engineering, and associated University of Nebraska Foundation scholarships.

Scholarships not considered institutional are external scholarships, like one offered through your local church you received as a high school senior. If you have an external scholarship, go to Husker Hub to learn about how it applies to your scholarship and financial aid package. Each external scholarship is different. If your external scholarship does not have limitations, you may be able to stack it on top of the Kiewit Scholars scholarship up to the UNL cost of attendance. If your external scholarship does have limitations, such as the scholarship may only be applied to tuition, then it will be applied to your account before your Kiewit Scholars scholarship.

What fees does this scholarship cover?

The Kiewit Scholars scholarship covers standard fees (technology fee, library fee, facility fee, online course fee, etc.) as well as academic, credit-bearing class fees.

Examples of charges not covered by the scholarship include parking permits, University Health Center charges, late fees, housing damage fees, and extra NSE guest fees.

Can I use this scholarship toward summer classes?

With leadership and industry experience an important component of this program, we intend students spend their summers gaining invaluable experiential learning. As such, this scholarship does not cover summer classes.

Can I use this scholarship toward online courses?

Yes, this scholarship will cover online classes. Engineering is largely an in-person major, but you may take online classes while in your degree.

Can I use this scholarship at another University of Nebraska Campus?

This scholarship is exclusive to UNL courses on the Lincoln campus.

Can I take a gap year or a semester off and keep my scholarship?

This scholarship covers tuition and fees for four consecutive years.

Can I use this scholarship toward multiple undergraduate degrees?

Students must be majoring in one of the required program majors in the College of Engineering to remain eligible. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for four consecutive years. Students may add minors, but should consult with program leadership and their advisors on how it may impact their four year graduation plan.

Is there a credit hour limit with this scholarship?

Scholars follow the University's policy regarding maximum credit hour limits allowed per semester.

Can I apply as a current UNL student?

The Kiewit Scholars program is open to incoming first-time freshmen.

Housing

What housing can I choose my freshmen year?

You may select any University housing and meals plan available to freshmen. This does not include Greek housing.

Can I live at home?

Students are able to live at home if they file a waiver with housing and receive approval. Students living at home will forfeit their housing benefit, but may be eligible for a meal plan. Please reach out to Kiewit Scholars leadership if you wish to live off campus your freshmen year.

Can I live in a fraternity?

The Kiewit Scholars first year housing scholarship applies only to University Housing. Students who choose to live in a Greek house will forfeit their housing benefit, but may be eligible for a meal plan. Please reach out to Kiewit Scholars leadership if you wish to live in Greek housing your freshmen year.

Can I live in an engineering learning community?

Yes! A learning community is a great opportunity to get involved and satisfies one of your involvement requirements your freshmen year.

Experiences

What programs are eligible for the education abroad stipend?

Students may use their $2,500 stipend toward any UNL affiliated or faculty-led education abroad program. The stipend is a flat amount toward your course and program costs.

Can I also be in the Honors program or other programs on campus?

Students may choose to be in the Honors program in addition to Kiewit Scholars.

Students may not be in the following programs in addition to Kiewit Scholars: Multicultural Engineering Program, Women in Engineering Program, WHT Scholars, Raikes, or the Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy. These programs have conflicting scholarships and/or time commitments.

Will I have the opportunity to have additional internships outside the Kiewit internship?

All students in the program will complete one summer internship with Kiewit. Students may choose to apply to Kiewit for an internship for a second summer or they may choose to seek other roles in industry or research, depending on their interests.
