Lumanti Shakya

Graduate Student CIVE-PhD Omaha Geotechnical and Materials Engineering-Advisor: Yumeng Zhao University of Nebraska-Lincoln

I am an enthusiastic and analytically driven civil engineering graduate with strong academic achievements and hands-on professional experience in geotechnical and structural engineering. My undergraduate studies at Tribhuvan University’s Pulchowk Campus, combined with my work as a civil engineer and supervisor in governmental offices, have provided me with a solid foundation in site evaluation, soil investigation, structural analysis, and design. Motivated by a passion for soil–structure interaction and seismic geotechnics, I aim to pursue advanced graduate research leading to a Ph.D. My long-term goal is to contribute to the development of resilient and sustainable infrastructure through innovative geotechnical solutions.

Education

• B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Tribhuvan University, IOE, Pulchowk Campus, Nepal, 2023 - Percentage: 77.96%

• Higher Secondary Education (+2 Science), National School of Sciences, Nepal, 2018 - GPA: 3.79

Employment History

• University Of Nebraska, Lincoln- Graduate Research Assistant (08/21/2025-Present) - Conduct research as part of my graduate studies, specifically related to soil-structure interaction, SPH modeling of granular materials, and experimental testing of geotechnical materials under Dr.Yumeng Zhao’s supervision.

• Urban Development and Building Office, Kathmandu – Civil Engineer (06/2024–07/2025) - Conducted geotechnical evaluations, authored soil investigation reports, assisted in structural design and estimation of public infrastructure projects.

• Urban Development and Building Office, Kathmandu – Supervisor (06/2023–06/2024) - Supervised site inspections, prepared estimations, checked as-built drawings, and assisted senior engineers in evaluations.

Area of Research and Professional Interest

• Soil–structure interaction

• Seismic geotechnics and earthquake engineering

• Granular mechanics and failure mechanisms

• Computational modeling and numerical techniques

• Ground improvement and soil stabilization

Research Experience

• Seismic Vulnerability Evaluation and Retrofitting of Existing RCC Structure (Capstone Project), Tribhuvan University, Nepal (06/2022–04/2023) - Led team analysis of a multi-storied school building using ETABS and SAP2000; implemented seismic codes (IS, NBC) and developed retrofitting designs.

• Seismic Analysis of Masonry Building in Local Community, Tribhuvan University, Nepal (08/2022–10/2022) - Conducted structural analysis using NBC and IS codes; evaluated need for retrofitting and proposed strengthening techniques.

Achievements

• Merit-based full scholarship for undergraduate study at Pulchowk Campus (Ranked in top 2% in IOE entrance exam).

• Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship and Merit Award for Higher Secondary Studies (Class 11–12).

• Awarded Girl Topper Medal, Shree Kumari Secondary School, Kathmandu (SEE exams).
