Contact
Mitra Nasimi is a Ph.D. candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research focuses on the application of deep learning and remote sensing for tornado damage assessment. In particular, she is working on generating an automated approach for detecting fallen trees and root balls from aerial imagery, which helps in understanding wind patterns and tornado terrain interactions. During her PhD, she developed the open-source TreEAID platform, which integrates deep learning, advanced image processing, and geospatial analysis to facilitate tornado damage assessments.
Throughout her academic journey, Mitra has been recognized with multiple awards, including first place in the University Libraries’ GIS Map Competition and the College of Engineering Graduate Symposium poster competition, as well as travel awards from national conferences. Most recently, she received the Nebraska Section ASCE Student Support for Transportation Engineers Fellowship (2025–2026).
