Kyle Schneweis was appointed by Governor Pete Ricketts as the Director of the Nebraska Department of Roads on June 8, 2015. Schneweis brings nearly 20 years of experience in the transportation field to the position. His diverse background in
civil engineering, transportation policy, and private sector consulting, provide a unique perspective to the Department.
After earning a civil engineering degree from the University of North Dakota, Schneweis began his professional career at the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). In his time at KDOT, he led the update of the state's long-range transportation plan and staffed the governor's Blue Ribbon Transportation Task Force. Schneweis was appointed Chief of Government Affairs where he helped shepherd the legislative passage of an $8.3 billion transportation program.
After a dozen years with KDOT, Schneweis joined High Street Consulting, a public policy firm out of Washington, D.C., where he assisted more than a dozen state DOT clients on a variety of strategic planning and policy initiatives.
As Director, Schneweis has spent his first year traveling the state, getting to know NOOR staff and working together to shape the future of Nebraska's
transportation system. Schneweis continues to focus on the customer. He puts great emphasis on transparency, keeping customers involved and informed, and seeking out opportunities that will positively affect the economy. Schneweis believes in a team approach and empowering employees to help inform decisions.
Although he spent much of the last two decades in Kansas, he is not entirely unfamiliar with Nebraska. His wife, Laurel, grew up in Lincoln and the family is enjoying getting back in the "Good Life." They have two toddler boys, Mazlo and Karver.
