The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlights the need for a sensitive surveillance system that can detect health threats. Wearable technologies make the acquisition of evaluable clinical grade physiological data streams across a population feasible. Such a wearable technology could also be used to detect episodes of increased air pollution or exacerbations of chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Dr. Eric Markvicka's lab (http://smr.unl.edu/) in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering is searching for a M.S. or Ph.D. student with an interest in studying wearable electronic devices to continuously monitor physiological data. The wearable electronic device will incorporate a range of biosensors for measuring key biological signals including heart rate, blood oxygenation, blood pressure, flow of breath, and gait.
