Charge
Describe the current and future needs of COE faculty, staff, and students engaged in research for support from core / shared facilities.  What is the ideal method for workflow from project concept to project realization?  Scope includes Mechanical shop, Electrical shop, IT support for research, and physical infrastructure.

Things to consider:
  • Constrained resources, Extremely expensive equipment, Increased multidisciplinary works
  • Exclude Space (space discussions will be addressed separately and is not part of this charge)
  • We are working in a situation with increasingly constrained resources, increasingly expensive equipment, and increasingly multi-disciplinary work. Engineering disciplines are moving away from each faculty having their own laboratory / facility / equipment and towards maximizing use of resources to support faculty research. We need to acknowledge that equipment ultimately is owned by the university.
  • Provide information of what equipment is available for use by the college; encourage avoidance of redundancy.
  • Explain how F&A works and where COE stands on startup.
Questions for consideration.
  • How can the College manage and maintain equipment that are shared?
  • What best practices from other colleges or institutions can we incorporate?
  • How do we cover repair and replacement of equipment?
  • How can a college manage resources that are shared? If someone uses other people’s equipment: they should be trained, recognize that there is a cost.
  • There is no need to develop unique mechanisms to supporting faculty research needs; rather efforts should be focused on using approaches that have proven successful in academic settings.
Deliverables: A plan for performing an assessment throughout the college of our research support needs and how they are currently met.  This assessment will inform consideration of COE resources.
