Jeff Lundy almost missed his chance at an opportunity of a lifetime – a career at General Motors. While Lundy was an engineering student majoring in mechanical engineering at Nebraska, he registered for all scholarships posted to the department’s bulletin board. But when he saw a GM scholarship listed, offering an internship in Milford, Michigan in addition to paid full tuition for a student’s junior and senior years of college, he initially balked and walked away never thinking he had a chance. Thankfully, Lundy changed his mind and applied anyway.

Now a senior manager at GM, Lundy was honored in April as the college’s Alumni Masters recipient, sharing the honor during the Medallion Dinner on April 5 with 10 additional UNL graduates along with recipients of the Family Tree Award.

A 1995 UNL graduate, Lundy - an Alliance, Nebraska native - began his full-time career at Milford Proving Ground, the company’s playground for vehicle testing, and also spent more than three years in Shanghai, China overseeing GM’s fuel economy compliance strategy. In addition to learning a new language in a new country, he also learned to drive a motorcycle – a skill he brought back when he and his family returned to the United States where he served as lead development engineer for Cadillac’s flagship sedan, the CT6.

“I learn every day,” Lundy admitted. “I don’t feel like I’m doing the same thing at all. Engineering in general,” he added, “you always have to continue to learn.”
