Scholar Experiences

2022 Summer Internships for Kiewit Scholars include: Omaha, NE, Lenexa, KS, Corpus Christi, TX, Phoenix, AZ and Honolulu, HI.

Welcome Event

Kiewit Scholars will kick off their first semester in the fall with a welcome from the College of Engineering and Kiewit leadership. Family and friends are invited to this event at the Wick Alumni Center on campus.

Leadership Retreat

Scholars will attend the Leadership Retreat with program leadership at Carol Joy Holling Center in Ashland, Nebraska. Students will take part in a low-stress trust course, as well as other facilitated team-building activities. After lunch, program leadership will review the scholarship handbook as well as begin the first Complete Engineer activity. Following the retreat, students are expected to attend the NUBE Experience: Nebraska Undergraduates Becoming Engineers.

Seminar Courses

In addition to their selected major’s curriculum, students will enroll in a Kiewit Scholar seminar every semester in the program. This one-credit course offers extensive and in-depth learning in all facets of the Complete Engineer competencies, with a special focus on leadership and communication. Through this course, students will receive industry mentorship with regular Kiewit involvement. Students will learn more about enrolling in their advising appointment during New Student Enrollment.

Education Abroad

Scholars are encouraged to plan for their study abroad experience early. Students will learn more about options for study abroad when visiting with their academic advisor as well as in the seminar course, where the Education Abroad office will give a guest lecture. Learn more about opportunities here: Engineering's liaison to the Education Abroad office, Allison Hinesley, is a great contact for students beginning to craft their experiences abroad.

Mentorship and Coaching

In addition to one-on-one coaching with the program director, students will be assigned professional mentors from Kiewit, as well as peer mentors.

Additional Program Experiences

Outside the seminar, students can look forward to Kiewit Day, including a visit to the new Kiewit headquarters in Omaha. Other special opportunities are offered throughout the program.
