Husker Rocketry reaches new heights at international competition

Summer 2026

The team of engineering students placed seventh overall and fourth in the 10K Commercial Off-the-Shelf category at the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) in Midland, Texas, the best finish in Husker Rocketry history. Their rocket, VORTEX, flew 9,693 feet, reached a hypersonic speed of Mach 8.8 and achieved 26.7Gs carrying a payload.

“They built an entire rocket and made it fly, all within eight months,” said Rachael Wagner, team adviser since 2024 and assistant professor of practice in mechanical and materials engineering and robotics engineering. “The lessons they learn are so valuable. I can see firsthand how it helps them in classes and helps them solve real-world problems.”

College of Engineering, Kongju National University establish joint Ph.D. program

The agreement is the culmination of several years of relationship-building beginning in 2021 when Dongkyoung Lee, professor of mechanical and automotive engineering at KNU, contacted Jae Sung Park, Richard L. McNeel Associate Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Nebraska. KNU had recently received funding through South Korea's prestigious Brain Korea 21 initiative for its Graduate Program for Eco-Friendly Future Automotive Technology and was seeking an international partner to strengthen its research and graduate education efforts.

From Classroom to Competition

The Nebraska Racing Figure 8 Team gives students the opportunity to develop technical and professional skills through hands‑on experience in vehicle design, fabrication, and competition. With early involvement and structured training, members quickly apply their learning in real-world settings — leading up to participation in the team’s first race of the season on July 10.

The undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the MME Department prepare students for successful careers and lifelong learning in mechanical engineering or allied fields in which the academic discipline serves as an educational base.
