Abstract

DMITRY OLEYNIKOV is board certified in General Surgery and is the Chief for Gastrointestinal, Minimally Invasive, and Bariatric Surgery at The University of Nebraska Medical Center, School of Medicine. He is also the Director of The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and is Founder and Director of The Center for Advanced Surgical Technology, a university-wide program dedicated to the promotion of research in biomedical engineering and provision of research infrastructure.

He received his education at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University in the Bronx, New York in 1994. His residence was completed at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2000. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Oleynikov served as Acting Instructor and Senior Fellow at the Center for Videoendoscopic Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the Department of Surgery at Seattle, Washington. He joined the Faculty as Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2001 and rose to rank of full professor by 2009. In 2012 he was named The Joseph and Richard Still endowed professor of surgery and was subsequently named, in 2014, the Chief of Gastrointestinal Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Oleynikov has developed a number of educational programs at the graduate and postgraduate level that includes medical students, residents, faculty and PhDs. He founded the Minimally Invasive Surgical Fellowship program in 2003, which graduates 2 clinical and 2 research fellows annually. He continues to dedicate his time to education by developing and teaching the skills curriculum for the surgical residency as well as multiple surgical courses and skills labs.

Dr. Oleynikov has published over 200 peer reviewed publication and is currently an active principal investigator of numerous federal research grants totaling over 12 million dollars from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense and The National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Since founding The Center for Advanced Surgical Technology at The University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Center has been directly responsible for the acquisition of over 30 million dollars in external research support, over 70 patents, numerous publications, and the creation of startup ventures.
