The University of Nebraska is transitioning to a single, unified Canvas environment beginning with Fall 2026 courses. This move will improve collaboration, streamline support, and create a more consistent learning experience for students, faculty, staff, and academic leaders across NU campuses.

The new Canvas environment is available at canvas.nebraska.edu, and instructors are encouraged to log in and explore the system as they prepare for Fall 2026. Spring and Summer 2026 courses will continue to be delivered in the current campus‑specific Canvas systems.

Canvas Convergence

ECEC Recommended Steps

Step 1: Log into the new NU Canvas

Log in with your TrueYou credentials to the New Canvas. Verify your access and content in this new instance.

Moved Courses

Your registrar courses from Fall 2024 to Fall 2025 have already been copied into the new Canvas instance.

Upcoming Courses

Spring and Summer 2026 courses will be automatically copied by ITS approximately 2 weeks after the respective semester ends.

Review Courses

You may use the Canvas Review Checklist to ensure your course and integrations are functioning as expected.

Please note that student data will not be copied to the new NU Canvas. Instead, you will continue to have access to the current UNL Canvas for at least 5 years if you need this data.

Step 2: Copy other courses (if needed)

If you need any sandboxes, special courses or courses prior to Fall 2024 in the new NU Canvas, copy them into the new instance.

Note that you will still have access to your courses in the current UNL Canvas without copying them for at least 5 years.

Copy a Course

To copy a Canvas shell, you may use the NU Canvas Utility tool. This can be accessed from the Canvas left side global navigation menu by selecting Help, then Canvas Utilities.

Note: This will copy the course content, but student data is not included in this process.

Courses That Cross the Canvas Transition

If you have a non-semester Canvas course where a cohort or section spans across the Canvas Convergence move (i.e. continues across Summer and Fall 2026) and may need the student gradebook copied, please submit a ticket or connect with ITS

If you are unsure if this applies to you, please reach out to your Instructional Designer.

Other Features

For more support with Canvas shells outside of the course registrar, such as student enrollments, please reach out to ITS.

Step 3: Design your course

Reach out to an Instructional Designer for support on course design and pedagogical uses with Canvas.

Support & Resources

Self-Service Resource

The Canvas Utility tool gives instructors access to a limited number of tasks, including:

  • creating personal sandboxes
  • merging course sections
  • copying courses

Note: The NU Canvas Utility tool is a separate web application from the previous UNL-specific Canvas Utility tool. Please ensure you are using the correct platform for the Canvas instance you are working on.
