Applications for UNL Faculty Development Fellowships (FDF) are typically due to the College of Engineering Dean’s Office on the last Friday of January (for academic year or fall-semester-only applications) and on the first Monday in July (for spring-semester-only applications). The FDF application will require a discussion with the unit leader regarding teaching arrangements and presumed temporary apportionment adjustments. Please initiate this conversation as soon as possible if you plan to apply.
A complete application includes the following documents:
- A completed Application for Faculty Development Fellowship WITHOUT applicant and unit head signatures or initials, uploaded in PDF format. The Executive Vice Chancellor’s Office will review the information provided in the form and route for signatures following any requested revisions or clarifications as facilitated by the Dean’s Office.
- Note: In Part II of the form, ‘Evaluation Considerations,’ a temporary change of apportionment during the leave is presumed and should be discussed in advance with the unit leader.
o Applicants are required to include in the text box the following: 1) a brief summary of the work to be done during the leave; 2) a brief description of how that work will be evaluated; and 3) a brief statement describing how the faculty member’s annual performance evaluation will consider the outcomes of the faculty development fellowship activities.
- Applicants are also required to include a sentence stating that their annual performance evaluation will acknowledge any temporary change in apportionment during the leave. Please provide any additional information as to rationale for the apportionment adjustment or other brief explanatory information
- A statement by the applicant (typically at most three pages) describing the proposed project. This statement should include:
- a description of the work to be undertaken during the proposed leave
- an explanation of the benefits of the proposed leave to the university and the faculty member
- an updated report on the dates, activities and accomplishments from any previous paid leaves while at UNL, if applicable
- The applicant’s current CV
- A letter of support from the applicant’s Unit Head
Criteria
The following criteria are used by the Dean when evaluating whether or not to recommend approval of the Faculty Development Fellowship:
- The applicant’s duties may be covered by the unit during the leave.
- The proposed activities will provide significant professional development to the applicant and contribute to sustained excellence in areas related to the candidate’s apportionment.
- The proposed activities will help the applicant’s unit and the College to reach strategic goals, related to research/discovery, teaching/learning, and/or engagement.
- If the applicant has received a Faculty Development Fellowship in the past, it has led to significant scholarly outputs (i.e. external funding, publications, graduate education, scholarship of teaching and learning, +) and/or engagement.
- The candidate’s work performance over the past 6 years will also be considered.
Applicants will be informed of the Dean’s recommendation and/or when their applications are forwarded to the EVC Office, typically within two months of the submission deadline. If you have questions about this process, please contact the Associate Dean for Faculty and Inclusion (Yusong Li, yli7@unl.edu) or the COE Director of Administration and Chief of Staff (Kathy Glenn, kglenn2@unl.edu) for assistance.
