Duo Memo for Engineering

Engineering IT notes on Duo

Mandatory Two-Factor authentication (2FA currently Duo) is coming May 15 for almost all University logins except to your computer itself.  If you currently have 2FA enabled, it is probably not configured for Canvas or Office 365 logins.  This will change May 15.  Canvas and Office 365 email will be Two-Factor at that point for everyone.

If you do not currently have Duo enabled, once you enable it, it WILL be active for everything--including Canvas and Office 365 email--immediately.  (if you enable now that means you will have to take your two-factor device to class if you need to login to any university services like Canvas or Box during class)

Using a web browser to check your email continues to work (at https://mymail.unl.edu).

On a computer (Windows or Mac), the only email applications that are supported are MS Outlook 2016, 2019, or Office 365 so that you are able to use 2FA to read your email.  Your Outlook must be configured to use an 'Exchange Server' or 'Office 365', if you are using Outlook (any version, even 2016+) but have it configured to use POP/IMAP/SMTP that will not work with Two-Factor.

On phones/tablets only the MS Outlook App from the device's app store is supported.  For Apple Devices, Apple Mail on iOS > 11 is reported to work.  On Android, the standard mail app, or the Gmail app do NOT work.

More importantly for phones/tablets, you likely will have to remove the email account, and then add it back once Two-Factor is enabled on your email accountn

To enroll in Duo Two Factor, you can go to https://TrueYou.nebraska.edu.

It is highly recommended to use more than one device for two-factor. You may register your smart phone, university land-line, home phone, tablet, etc. You can also request a hardware token which is especially useful if you are leaving the country.  You can find the Duo app in your devices App Store.  If the Duo App is not in the App Store, your device may be too old to support Duo (reportedly iOS 10 or older and Android 6 or older).

To enable 2FA on your Canvas and email before the May 15 switch you can go to https://its.unl.edu/services/duo, and on the right side click on the button that says "ADD TWO-FACTOR PROTECTION TO CANVAS AND EMAIL/OFFICE365".  That takes you to a page that walks you through the steps.  You may want to do this if you are leaving campus before May 15 and want to make sure you can still read your email.  If you do not enable manually, you will be switched automatically May 15.
