Shannon Bartelt-Hunt, the Donald R. Voelte, Jr. and Nancy A. Keegan Chair of Engineering and professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been named a 2024 Fellow of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).

Medals will be presented to the 2024 class of Fellows during the 2025 AEESP Awards Ceremony at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Bartelt-Hunt has long been a national leader in environmental engineering research and teaching, with a research focus on water quality in agricultural production systems. That research has been centered on the behavior of contaminants – including steroid hormones, antibiotics and microplastics – in agroecosystems and the physical and chemical transport processes for contaminants in soil and water.

During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Bartelt-Hunt led efforts to track the spread of the coronavirus by studying data collected from wastewater systems. That information has been instrumental in helping public health officials better allocate resources to track and combat a variety of diseases, including seasonal influenza.

Bartelt-Hunt has received national awards for research and teaching, including a 2012 National Science Foundation Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award and she was a member of a team receiving the 2015 Grand Prize for University Research Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. She is also a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
