About the Event

Get ready for a day filled with invention, exploration, and hands-on fun!

Hosted by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Engineering, Discover Engineering Days invites middle school students (grades 6–8) and teachers to step into the world of engineering — and see what it’s really like to think, build, and create like an engineer.

Students will:

  • Tackle exciting, real-world challenges

  • Collaborate with classmates

  • Put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test

What Makes It Special

Each of the four daily sessions starts with a short, engaging presentation on the engineering topic, then jumps right into a hands-on activity. You might be:

  • Launching rockets

  • Designing roller coasters

  • Exploring the world of nanotechnology

  • Experimenting with food engineering

  • Building earthquake-proof buildings

  • Learning the secrets of construction management

  • Creating wild chemical reactions

  • And more!

Sessions are led by Engineering Ambassadors (undergraduate engineers trained in K–12 outreach), engineering faculty, and industry partners. You’ll explore fields like aerospace, chemical, civil, mechanical, electrical, systems, and more — all through accessible, engaging, and unforgettable activities.

As Nebraska’s only engineering college, we’re proud to inspire the state’s next generation of innovators.

Lunch

Students should bring their own sack lunch.

We offer a variety of other outreach experiences, including:

  • Reading materials about engineering and UNL programs
