College Graduate Recruitment Events

We believe the campus visit is an important component to helping students decide where to continue their education. Upcoming University and College events:

The Spring Admitted Students Day 2025 is scheduled for Friday, February 28 -  During visit day, students will participate in College coordinated activities including a presentation by the Office of Graduate Studies, a tour of the College of Engineering, a presentation about Graduate Programs at the College of Engineering, lunch with current graduate students, and department faculty visits. Arrangements will be made for students who will be housed on Scott Campus to be included in the day’s activities while also having quality time on Scott Campus. The academic unit is responsible for arranging the student’s travel and lodging arrangements and for coordinating the student’s department visit schedule.

  • Admitted students are eligible to receive a recruitment grant for up to $1,000 to be used toward their travel expenses. Please send requests to the department Graduate Chair. For faculty and units who wish to invite admitted students to visit for a College Graduate Recruitment Event, Spring 2025 Admitted Students Day nominations are due by Friday, February 7 to Kayla Person (kperson4@unl.edu), Director of Engineering Graduate Programs, cc’ing Mark Riley (mriley3@unl.edu). Please consult with your department’s Graduate Committee Chair for their nomination due date.
Nebraska Engineering Recruitment Fellowships (NERF)

The Nebraska Engineering Recruitment Fellowships are a collection of endowments from the College of Engineering’s generous donors. These fellowships are one-year awards of $5000 total, presented to outstanding graduate student applicants on top of an existing assistantship offer, which may be renewed for a second year. Priority for NERF fellowship should be given to domestic, PhD applicants.

If you are interested in nominating a prospective graduate student for these funds, please contact your program’s Graduate Committee Chair. The Graduate Chairs from each department will forward a nomination letter and a copy of the student’s assistantship offer letter to Kayla Person, Director of Engineering Graduate Programs, cc’ing Mark Riley, Associate Dean for Research. If approved the unit head and faculty member will be informed and the College will send a separate fellowship award letter. NERF nominations for Fall 2025 are due February 7 to the Director of Graduate Programs. Please consult with your department’s Graduate Committee Chair for their nomination due date. Decisions will promptly be made by a committee of Graduate Chairs to allow for enough time to notify applicants.

Office of Graduate Studies Recruitment Fellowships

The Office of Graduate Studies Recruitment Fellowships are a collection of endowments from the University’s generous donors. These fellowships include the Othmer Fellowship, Chancellor’s Fellowship, and the Edgrin Tuition Fellowship.

  • Othmer Fellowships are intended to assist in recruiting exceptional scholars seeking a terminal degree (PhD). While UNL alums are not prohibited from receiving the Othmer, the general assumption is that a UNL student would only receive this fellowship if we are actively competing with other prestigious institutions to retain the student at UNL. Students must have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA at previous degree, excellent letters of recommendation, and have a department assistantship. The Othmer is $4,000 and is renewable for up to 3 years.
  • Chancellor’s Fellowships are intended to assist departments in recruiting superior graduate students by adding fellowship funds in addition to their assistantship offer. Students must be newly admitted masters or doctoral students, have excellent letters of recommendation, a minimum of 3.0 GPA in previous degree, and have a department assistantship. The Chancellor’s is $4,000 and is automatically renewable for a second year given excellent progress toward degree completion.
  • Edgren Tuition Fellowships provide reduced tuition remission for unfunded, domestic, non-resident graduate students. There is no work or service requirement in association with the tuition fellowship. Students must be newly admitted masters or doctoral students, enrolled full-time and on-campus. International students are not eligible. Students must have excellent letters of recommendation, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at previous degree, and have no other assistantship or other tuition waiver benefit. Value of the Edgren Tuition Fellowship is roughly $7,000 per academic year and $1,500 per summer term.

If you are interested in nominating a prospective graduate student for these funds, please contact your program’s Graduate Committee Chair and include a nomination letter. OGS fellowship nominations for Fall 2024 are due Friday, February 7 to the Director of Graduate Programs. Please consult with your department’s Graduate Committee Chair for their nomination due date. Decisions will promptly be made by a committee of Graduate Chairs to allow for enough time to notify applicants.

The Graduate Chairs will forward the nomination materials of top candidates from their unit, a nomination letter, and a copy of the student’s assistantship offer letter to Kayla Person, Director of Engineering Graduate Programs, cc’ing Mark Riley, Associate Dean for Research. Recommendations for the Edgren do not need to include an assistantship offer letter.
