Subbiah earns Gamma Sigma Delta award
Jeyamkondan Subbiah, professor of food engineering, biological systems engineering and food science and technology, has earned the Nebraska Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta Excellence in Research Award. The award will be presented at Gamma Sigma Delta's annual initiation and awards banquet at 6 p.m. Jan. 29 in the East Campus Union.
Five ECE students named PES Scholars
Five UNL Electrical Engineering students have been chosen as IEEE Power & Energy Society Scholars for 2016-17 -- seniors Bradley Naughton and Drew Wiseman and juniors Jackson Cutsor, Jacob Eckstrom and Alexander Meier. Wiseman, Eckstrom and Meier were also PES Scholars in 2015-16. The five honorees will receive up to $2,000 for the current academic year and were among the 230 chosen from American and Canadian universities from 529 applicants.
Qi Wang named NCMN Graduate Research Fellow
Qi Wang, a graduate student in mechanical and materials engineering, has been chosen as a 2017 Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience Graduate Research Fellow. His advisor is Jinsong Huang, professor of mechanical and materials engineering.
Nebraska Engineering faculty, post-doc earn NSRI research awards
At the National Strategic Research Institute's Researcher Recognition event on Nov. 2 in La Vista, two Nebraska Engineering faculty -- Dennis Alexander, professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Wallace Buchholz, research professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering -- were awarded NSRI Distinguished Scientist awards. Craig Zuhlke, a post-doctoral resarch assistant in electrical and computer engineering, received the NSRI Exceptional Post-Doctoral Research award.
Turner, students win ASNT Best Paper Award
Joseph Turner, professor of mechanical and materials engineering, graduate students Christopher Kube and Hualong Du are part of a team that was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Paper Award at a recent meeting of the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). The paper -- "Grain Size Measurement of Copper Welding Caps Via Ultrasonic Attenuation and Scattering Experiements" -- was co-authored by three researchers from the University of Windsor (Canada).
Lu receives 2016 Outstanding Postdoc Mentor award
Yongfeng Lu, Lott Distinguished University Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the 2016 Outstanding Postdoc Mentor Award on Nov. 2 at the Fall 2016 Research Fair Postdoc Awards Luncheon at the Nebraska Union.
ECE grad student Ying receives ICALEO Student Paper Award
Ying Liu, a Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering from Laser Assisted Nano Engineering Lab (LANE), received a second-place student paper award for "Laser Direct Writing of Multifunctional Micro/Nano Devices Using Carbon Nanotube-Polymer Composites" at the 2016 International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) on Oct. 20 in San Diego.
Tuan, Nguyen win T.C. Graham Prize
Christopher Tuan, professor of civil engineering, and Lim Nguyen, professor of electrical and computer engineering, have been named winners of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology's 2016 T.C. Graham Prize. The international award is designed to encourage development of new and innovative uses for steel. Tuan and Nguyen will use the $20,000 prize to develop a steel-based system that melts snow and ice on concrete surfaces.
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers gets Google grant
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers received a $500 Google mini-grant to help recruit more computer engineering students. the society strives for professionalism in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields; academic excellence; and service to the community.
Pitla earns ASABE Young Designer Award
The Department of Biological Systems Engineering capped a big summer with a bumper harvest of awards at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers conference in Orlando, Florida in late July. Only weeks after a UNL team won its first national championship at the ASABE International Quarter Scale Tractor Student Design Competition, the Fountain Wars team won its second national championship in three years, and BSE faculty gained nine national honors, including assistant professor Santosh Pitla (above) receiving the 2016 Sunkist Young Designer Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the profession and to stimulate professional achievement.
