College of Engineering Advising Syllabus

General Office Hours:
Monday – Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Office Location:
Engineering Library
W204 Nebraska Hall
Advising Appointments:
Students are assigned to a specific advisor at New Student Enrollment (NSE); however, they are welcome to visit any of the Engineering Student Services advisors as well as their assigned advisor. To visit an advisor, schedule an appointment through Student Success Hub (SSH).
Things to do Prior to Your Advising Appointment:
  • Review your degree audit.
  • Review the degree requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog:
    http://catalog.unl.edu/undergraduate/
  • Write out your questions for reference so you can make the most of your time with your advisor.
Appointment Etiquette:
  • Appointments can fill up fast, especially during Priority Registration. Plan ahead!
  • Prepare for your advising appointment.
    • Write down a list of topics, questions and specific courses that you would like to discuss.
  • Arrive promptly. Remember to bring documents that you want to show your advisor.
  • Turn off/silence your cell phone before entering the advisor’s office.
  • Cancel your appointment if you are unable to attend.
  • If you are seeing an advisor as a walk-in appointment, make sure the advisor is available to see you before walking into their office. Be patient as they may be working with another student even if you don’t see another student in their office.
Email an Advisor:
Use email when you have a quick question that requires a short answer. Send an email directly to your department advisor or one of the Engineering Student Services advisors listed under the Advising Office Link above.

You have access to your department advisor’s email address through:
  1. Your “Success Network” in Student Success Hub (SSH) (located in Canvas)
  2. Your MyRED account
Email Etiquette:
  • Use a subject line that clearly states what the email is about.
  • Include your full name as well as your NUID.
  • Include specific information (i.e.: class numbers [MECH 223] or error messages).
  • Keep the question clear and to the point. Be professional – proofread and spellcheck!
  • Use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation – no texting shortcuts!
  • Allow 24 hours, excluding weekends and holidays, for a response.
Other Academic Advising Options:
  • Leave a phone message: make sure to include your name, phone number, and NU ID along with your question. Speak clearly and slowly when leaving your phone message. Make sure you are not doing other activities while speaking on the phone to your advisor or your advisor’s voice mail.
  • Utilize resources: review course sequencing guides, your degree audit and the Undergraduate Catalog.
