P3 - 2012 Project Overview

In the summer of 2012, seven student interns and one graduate student assistant participated in UNL's Partners in Pollution Prevention Program. Students worked with businesses to research methods of reducing waste and preventing pollution. They also assisted with a wide variety of environmental projects focusing on education, energy efficiency, water conservation and waste management. Each student prepared a report of proposed improvements, detailing the economic and environmental benefits of implementing their suggestions.

The following project overviews describe the interns' projects and recommendations.

Single Business Partnership

1. Martin Gakuria - Lincoln Water System, Lincoln
   Conducted research to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to infrastructure growth.


2. Alex Sellers - Gavilon LLC in Omaha, Grand Island, Hastings, NE and St. Joseph, MO
   Assisted company in furthering sustainability initiatives by analyzing energy and waste consumption in grain elevators and fertilizer manufacturing plants.


3. Lais Speranza - Gavilon LLC in Omaha, Grand Island, Hastings, NE and St. Joseph, MO
   Assisted company in furthering sustainability initiatives by analyzing energy and waste consumption in grain elevators and fertilizer manufacturing plants.

Multiple Business Assignments

1. Aina Kekilova - Multiple Projects in Lincoln and Battle Creek
   Analyzed lighting system energy efficiency for small community waste


2. Jacob Martinez - NDEQ - Multiple Projects in Lincoln, Battle Creek, Malcolm and Wahoo
   Conducted detailed energy audits for three small community wastewater treatment plants.


3. Keith Miller - UNL Extension and Agricultural Producers in Clay County Nebraska
   Analyzed irrigation systems for water/energy conservation.


4. Jordan Wachal - UNL Extension and Agricultural Producers in Fillmore County Nebraska
   Analyzed irrigation systems for water/energy conservation.
